NMP (N-Methyl-2-pyrrolidon)
NMP
NMP, short for N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone, is an organic solvent with the chemical formula C₅H₉NO. It is known for its high solubility and low volatility, which makes it useful in various industrial applications, especially in the production of lithium-ion batteries.

NMP in battery production
NMP plays an important role in battery production, particularly in the manufacture of electrodes for lithium-ion batteries. Here, NMP is used as a solvent to dissolve binders such as polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) in the slurry mixture for cathodes and anodes. PVDF is widely used due to its chemical stability and good adhesion properties.
In slurry production, the active materials (e.g. lithium metal oxides or graphite), conductive additives (e.g. carbon nanotubes) and the dissolved PVDF are mixed in NMP to produce a homogeneous suspension, which is then coated onto the collectors (aluminum foil for cathodes, copper foil for anodes).
After coating the slurry onto the collectors, NMP is removed by a drying process, leaving behind an even and well-adhering layer. This step is crucial for the quality and performance of the battery electrodes.
