Process skids

A skid is a mobile, chassis-like structure on which a range of industrial equipment and materials are mounted. Skids are commonly used in mixing technology and can contain all the necessary measuring and control equipment, such as flow meters, sensors and control devices with data acquisition or control systems. Depending on the application, additional elements such as pumps, tanks and valves and heat exchangers can be added.

Process skids for active material are pre-assembled units that are used in the field of battery technology and electrode production.

Process skids in battery production

The first step in battery production is the production of the suspension, also known as “electrode slurry”. This suspension consists of electrode materials, an organic solvent and a polymer binder. The electrode slurry is applied to a copper or aluminum foil, dried and calendered. This coated foil forms the cathode or anode of the battery.

Process skids facilitate the integration of solids, slurry and other process media into the battery manufacturing process. They are pre-assembled units, especially for the production of the cathode material (NMC). Included are pumps, heat exchangers, blowers, filters, valves and instruments.

NMC as cathode material

NMC stands for lithium-nickel-manganese-cobalt oxides. These materials have the general formula LiₐNiₓMnᵧCoᶻO₂. The crystal structure of NMC is similar to that of lithium cobalt oxide (LiCoO₂) and has a layered structure.

One of the properties of NMC oxides is that they can release and reabsorb lithium ions and electrons. As a result, NMC is an important storage material for lithium-ion batteries. It is used on the positive pole side (cathode) and releases electrical energy when discharged.
